Stefan’s Story

The Under Our Wing Inspiration
Stefan Keryan, 8 years old, was vacationing with his family when tragedy struck. They were on their first ever cruise and one of the stops for the day was in Belize. They planned to go on a tour to a monkey sanctuary which also included a horseback ride. According to Heidi Keryan, Stefan’s mother, she heard yelling and looked over to see a horse running toward them. As the horse ran past, she saw the saddle was flipped and her son was being dragged, hanging by his foot that was caught in the stirrup. The horse dragged Stefan for almost two miles along the gravel pavement before someone jumped in a car and stopped the horse down the road.

According to the family, Stefan suffered third degree burns on his back, arms and leg, and also required surgery to replace part of his scalp.

When Geno Haggan, owner of Peak Medevac, saw his story on the news, he immediately sent one of his medical planes and medical crew to fly Stefan back home to Colorado, all for free.  The Peak Medevac Team was deployed and within 24-hours they were doing an international rescue. “I am very proud of my team and how quickly things came together to get this little boy back to Colorado,” said Haggan.

Stefan’s story was the inspiration for Under Our Wing.

Molly’s Mission

Under Our Wing had its FIRST OFFICIAL FLIGHT (since receiving its 501c3 designation) on Friday! It was amazing! The flight went from Boston to Charleston to get 13 year old Molly back home where she can recover after surgery.

About the mission:
Molly is a 13 year old female who was adopted from China when she was two. Molly has spina bifida and has had multiple surgeries over the years. Due to her condition, Molly had to have hip surgery at Children’s Hospital. Because she will be unable to sit up for take off and landing, Molly needed a private flight home where she can lay flat. Under Our Wing was able to step in and get Molly back home to Charleston where she can recover.

THANK YOU to Air Ambulance Worldwide for conducting the flight to get Molly home.

Motorcycle Miracle

Detective Jennifer Mills of the Aurora Police Department in Colorado took a trip to South Dakota with her fiancé to purchase a motorcycle. She was riding it back to Colorado when she ran into a damaged road in Nebraska while going 70 mph. Mills said she hit a pothole, which catapulted her off the bike. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

She suffered multiple broken bones and has had several surgeries. She had been recovering at a Nebraska hospital when Geno Haggan, owner of Peak Medevac International, heard what happened.  He sent his air ambulance and medical team to bring Mills back home to Colorado.

Mills was greeted by her friends and family, as well as dozens of members of the Aurora Police Department upon arrival at Centennial Airport.

“Feels amazing, feels amazing being on this side, seeing all of the love from the department,” she said. “I can’t even get close enough to thanking Peak Medevac for everything they’ve done. I probably wouldn’t have been home for months if it hadn’t been for them picking me up.”

Mills’ sister and kids were there when she landed. They said they were overwhelmed with gratitude.

“Pretty overwhelming, very emotional,” said Mills’ sister Che Mills. “From the bottom of my heart, thanks to everyone here.”

“If it wasn’t for Peak Medevac, we don’t know what we would have done,” said Mills’ son, Joseph O’Brien.

Officials with APD said it was important for them to be there the moment she arrived.

“We are a family — law enforcement,” said Sgt. Cody Lanier, who said he has worked alongside Mills at APD for around a decade.

Lanier said he felt mixed emotions when Mills arrived.

“Seeing her in pain, laying in a gurney, was not fun to see, but her being back in her home state, her hometown — uplifting,” he said. “The fact that someone was willing to step up and donate, people helping people. That’s what it’s all about.”
